The IDEA Initiative Africa

Over the course of 12 months, the program guided young people in co-creating innovative solutions to address SRHR issues in Africa, empowering them to drive change in their communities.

June 17, 2022 - Dec. 30, 2024

Planned Parenthood Global in partnership with Nailab Accelerator limited launched the IDEA Initiative Africa pilot program in June 2022 with the goal of tackling sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges across the continent. Over the course of 12 months, the program guided young people in co-creating innovative solutions to address SRHR issues in Africa, empowering them to drive change in their communities.

A core objective of the program is to empower youth and women in Africa to make informed decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures. To achieve this, the IDEA Initiative Africa brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, media personalities, artists, and creatives to develop advocacy ideas that could address pressing SRHR challenges across the region.

Nailab successfully ran two cohorts between 2022 and 2023, supporting 40 innovators and providing a shared seed investment of $20,000 to the top 6 innovations.

Impact

  • 220 applications received from Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda
  • 40 innovators incubated and supported to scale their impactful solutions
  • The top 6 innovators received a shared seed investment of $20,000 to bring their ideas to life

SRHR & SGBV Animated e-Learning Platform & Videos for Advocacy

Built an e-learning platform designed to enhance the handling of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) cases within the police force.

May 03, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2021

Partners: Women Empowerment Link, National Police Service (NPS) and UNFPA

In partnership with Women Empowerment Link and the National Police Service (NPS), Nailab was tasked with creating an e-learning platform designed to enhance the handling of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) cases within the police force. This platform hosts animated, interactive modules that educate officers on best practices for addressing these critical issues.

Nailab took the lead in developing the animated e-learning modules, drawing on existing NPS operational procedures and government-approved documents to ensure the content was both accurate and aligned with national protocols. A consultative approach was adopted, with input from key stakeholders in the Technical Working Group (TWG), including UN Women, SDG, Ministry of Health (MOH), Judiciary, Council of Governors (CoG), KICD, and Women Empowerment Link. This collaborative effort ensured that the content was comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and aligned with legal frameworks.

The program, supported by UNFPA, is aimed at improving the capacity of law enforcement to effectively address GBV and FGM cases, ultimately contributing to a safer, more supportive environment for survivors.

This initiative underscores our commitment to empowering stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed to tackle social issues through innovative digital solutions.
